2019 is being called the ‘Year of Pop-Ups’ as these temporary shops are revamping the retail scene. Pop-up stores are taking all the best elements of experiential retail and small format shopping and seamlessly combining them into one groundbreaking trend.
While pop-up shops are a popular fad, some
brands are dominating the game. Let’s check out some of this year’s hottest
pop-ups while examining what makes a pop-up successful.
Glossier
Throughout the entire year, popular beauty
brand Glossier has been hitting metros all over the U.S. New York, Miami, Los
Angeles, and Seattle are just a few of the cities that hosted these aesthetic
pop-ups.
Shoppers were transported into something akin to the Land of Milk and Honey; full of plush, glitter, flowers, moss, and other glammed-out natural elements. The cosmetic products were artfully incorporated into the scene, where shoppers were encouraged to try out their favorites while snapping Instagram-worthy pictures.
Coco
Cafe by Chanel
As Chanel launched its new line of beauty
products earlier this year, the company decided to celebrate the release with
pop-ups.
Allowing visitors to get introduced to the new
line in a hands-on way, Coco Cafes were opened up all over the globe. Guests
were able to sample products, enjoy drinks, smell the newest perfumes, and
more. If this isn't luxurious, what is?
Adidas’
EQT Gaming Room
Barcelona hosted Adidas’ most innovative
pop-up concept of 2019. The famous Adidas Game Room combined shopping and
gaming, all in one hot location. Guests could browse through the athletic
brand’s newest releases and also enjoy a round or two playing on gaming
machines. On top of this, they were able to see exclusive content only
available at this location.
BTS
World Tour
Who said retail pop-ups could only be done by
brands?
Globally popular Korean-based pop group BTS
showed us that even music groups could host a killer pop-up. Celebrating their
2019 Map of the Soul: Persona World
Tour, a series of pop-up shops would mark their arrival in popular cities.
Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, London, and
Paris all held these specialty events, where fans could get the latest
merchandise and exclusive items in a BTS-inspired ambiance.
Keys to
a Winning Pop Up
After looking at these rockstar examples,
let’s examine 3 features that helped these temporary shops experience success.
1. Know
Your Market
A successful pop-up is all about knowing your
audience - and then delivering exactly what they want. Adidas paired their
audiences’ interests in fashion, technology, and gaming to create a fun and
social experience revolving around their brand culture.
2.
Offer Limited-Time Items
Consumers love specialty items. Coco Cafes
were catered with all things Chanel-inspired, branding everything from the cups
to their napkins. The BTS pop-ups featured merchandise that fans couldn’t get
anywhere else, making it a can’t-miss event.
3.
Create a Picture-Worthy Scene
Installations and setting are key to
successful pop-ups. Establishing an interactive environment will encourage
guests to take pictures and create online conversations surrounding the event.
The Glossier shops hired professional landscapers and interior designers,
creating gorgeous photo backdrops aligned to their branding.
